Popular websites that are using a responsive meta tag but don't have an HTML 5 doctype

I’ve been following this project for a while and this is my first topic here.

First of all, congrats on this awesome project! It’s amazing and I really appreciate your work.

My first attempt earlier today was to find some popular websites that are using a responsive meta tag but don’t have an HTML 5 doctype. To me, that’s a bit contradictory and I was eager to find out the results.

So I wrote a very rough query to get the results and found out e.g. that whatsapp.com doesn’t even have a declared doctype at this time.

Here’s my tweet w/ the query & results.

SELECT url, rank
FROM [httparchive:runs.2018_01_01_pages]
WHERE NOT doctype="html" AND meta_viewport CONTAINS "width=device-width"
GROUP BY url, rank
ORDER BY rank desc

Some other ideas:

  1. Websites that have specified the latest HTML 5 doctype, but instead still use the script and link elements with redundant attributes like type="text/javascript" respectively type="text/css".

  2. Usage on lang v.s. hreflang attributes, considering that a while ago John Mueller said Google ignores the HTML lang attribute and he was recommending the use of link hreflang instead.

Let me know what you think!
